New methods and opportunities to enhance and supplement skills. Delineates the implications for assessment and treatment of the family with violence. Topics of physical abuse, sexual abuse and psychological/emotional abuse of adults and children within a family structure will be addressed. COUN 6607 The Family and Mental Illness: 2 semester hours.
Addresses therapeutic and community support that enhances the family unit as the primary care system. Mental illness as it relates to the family system is presented. PREREQ: Admission to the Master of Counseling Program or permission of instructor.
COUN 6608 The Family and Chemical Dependency: 2 semester hours.
Addresses family systems under the influence of addictions with primary emphasis on alcohol dependency. Models and patterns of addictions will be examined. PREREQ: Admission to the Master of Counseling Program or permission of instructor.
COUN 6609 The Family and the Aged: 2 semester hours.
Emphasizes the impact of aging on family systems from an economic, emotional, social, spiritual, and physiological perspective. PREREQ: Admission to the Master of Counseling Program or permission of instructor.

COUN 6612 Assessment and Diagnosis in Counseling: 3 semester hours.
Students will be introduced to counseling tests and assessments appropriate to various counseling settings, the assessment process, and related ethical and multicultural issues. Students will also be introduced to psychological classification systems and mental status evaluations. PREREQ: Admission to the master in counseling program or permission of the instructor.
COUN 6613 Basic Projective Techniques: 2 semester hours.
Projective theory and its relationship to psychoanalysis, dynamic theory, and learning theory. Techniques including problems of clinical practicality, prediction of behavior, and personality assessment. Practical experiences available in laboratory courses. COUN 6614 Lifespan Development: 2 semester hours.
Students will explore issues, stages, and systems of human development across the lifespan in the context of individuals, couples, families, and communities. The course includes an overview of developmental theories, norms, and applied practices in the context of social and cultural identities and factors. Course to be taken concurrently with COUN 6694 Psychodiagnosis & Psychotropic Drugs. PREREQ: Admission to the Master of Counseling program.
COUN 6615 Foundations of Clinical Rehabilitation: 3 semester hours.

COUN 6616 Professional Issues in Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling: 3 semester hours.

COUN 6617 Medical & Psychosocial Aspects of Disability: 2 semester hours.
A bio-psycho-social approach to the dynamics of coping and adjustment to disability and chronic illness. PREREP: Admission to the Master of Counseling Program or permission of the instructor.
COUN 6619 Individual Intelligence Testing: 3 semester hours.

COUN 6621 Professional Orientation and Ethics: 2 semester hours.
Introduction to profession of counseling: history, accreditation, licensure, organizational structure, advocacy, and use of technology. Career development theories and decision-making models for counselors including career resources and materials. PREREQ: Admission to the Master of Counseling Program.
COUN 6624 Cultural Counseling: 3 semester hours.
Students will explore issues of diversity, social justice, and multiculturalism including race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and other cultural factors, and participate in experiential activities relevant to culturally responsive counseling. COUN 6625 Crisis Interventions and Trauma Counseling: 3 semester hours.
Current information, skills, and strategies for counseling interventions specific to crises, disasters, and other trauma-causing events. Topics include: triage, assessment and diagnosis, individual and community resiliency, emergency preparedness, multicultural considerations, interagency cooperation, and "psychological first aid." COUN 6627 Conceptualizing Counseling Theory: 3 semester hours.
This course provides an overview of the conceptualization and application of counseling theory. Students will learn about foundational and contemporary approaches to working with clients.
COUN 6629 Counseling Children and Adolescents in K-12 Settings: 2 semester hours.
This course will introduce essential developmental considerations for counseling children and adolescents in K-12 settings. Special focus will include environmental factors, risk factors and warning signs for mental health and behavioral considerations. Specific attention will include interventions for working with clients in k-12 school settings.
COUN 6630 Addictions Counseling: 3 semester hours.
Acquaint students with current theories of addiction, recovery, and relapse prevention as well as effective strategies and techniques in working with clients with addictions. The course will explore public policies on local, state, and national levels with regard to addiction services. PREREQ: Admission to the Master of Counseling program or permission of instructor.
COUN 6638 Foundations of School Counseling: 2 semester hours.
This course serves as an introduction to the counseling profession speciality of school counseling. Specific focus will include current models and development of comprehensive school counseling programs, theories of school counseling, coordination of school based interventions essential to the practice of school counseling, collaboration and consultation approaches, crisis and management planning, cultural considerations, and strategies to promote equity in school counseling. COUN 6639 Application of School Counseling Foundations: 2 semester hours.
This course focuses on the application of school counseling foundations and techniques. Special focus will include school counselor roles as leaders, advocates, and systems change agents. Specific attention will include classroom lessons and management, outcome and data assessment and planning, social-emotional and trauma-informed practices for school counselors, and screening for risk factors in school populations. In this course, students will be introduced to quantitative research methods in the counseling profession. Students will learn the basics of designing a quantitative research study focused on counseling and/or counselor education and supervision, including how to identify/write pertinent research questions, options for study design and data collection, and means of data analysis. Students will learn through actively designing their own quantitative research study. PREREQ: Admission to the PhD in Counselor Education program.
COUN 7702 Advanced Quantitative Research Design: 2 semester hours.
Building upon an introductory course on quantitative research methods, students will delve further into quantitative research design specific to counseling and counselor education and supervision. This will include introduction to more advanced means of data analysis and study design specific to counseling/counselor education and supervision. Design, data collection, analysis and writing qualitative research. Observation of and assisting in the teaching and evaluation of a college course under the supervision of the course instructor. The student will prepare and deliver at least five lectures which will be observed by the instructor and will, in addition to observing the balance of the course, meet individually with the instructor for periodic discussions of procedure and methodology. Theory of vocational development, sociological aspects of vocational choice and entry, development of interests and aspiration levels, and research relating to entry into work, satisfaction in work, dissatisfaction in topics. Course is structured around the major theories of vocational development as they relate to individual development. Various approaches to vocational testing are included.
