Objectives:

Our chemistry courses will prepare students for industrial or government laboratory work; for graduate study in chemistry, biochemistry, or allied fields; and for professional programs in the health sciences.
The department offers four baccalaureate degree programs. The Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry is certified by the American Chemical Society, and most rigorously addresses the full breadth of the chemistry discipline. The Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry is a joint program with the Department of Biological Sciences that serves students most interested in the interface of these fields. The Bachelor of Arts degree is designed for students seeking flexibility to explore a wider variety of subjects beyond chemistry.
The accelerated B.S./M.S. program enables students to complete both B.S. and M.S. degrees within five years by beginning graduate coursework prior to completion of the undergraduate degree, and engaging in substantial summer research. Students may apply for this program as sophomores for admission as juniors. The department also offers a standalone Master of Science degree for any student who already hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry.
Prerequisites for Chemistry classes must have been taken within the preceding 5 years unless the student obtains permission of the instructor. All credits applied to a chemistry degree must have been earned within the preceding 10 years unless the original coursework or the student’s knowledge of the field can be shown to remain current. Evidence of currency must be approved by the department chair.
