Introduction to the roles and responsibilities of the health information field. Study abstraction, and application of health record content, documentation, and data integrity policies and strategies. Determine compliance of health record content according to current healthcare policy to include: origin, use, content, format, record retention, numbering and filing systems of electronic health records. Application of electronic health record computer applications found in health care. Accreditation and licensing standards along with state and federal laws pertaining to health information. Principles and application of diagnosis coding for statistical and reimbursement purposes utilizing International Classification of Disease-Clinically Modified. PREREQ: HO 1106, and HO 1111 or BIOL 3301 and BIOL 3302 or BIOL 2227 and BIOL 2228. F, S

HIT 2207 Supervised Professional Practice II: 4 semester hours.
Directed clinical practice in a health information department under the preceptorship of a practicing professional for 24 hours per week for eight weeks. COREQ: HIT 2204, and HIT 2213. PREREQ: HIT 2202, HIT 2205, HIT 2206 and HIT 2209. F, S

Principles and application of coding for statistical and reimbursement purposes utilizing Physicians' Current Procedural Terminology in conjunction with documentation standards. PREREQ: HO 1106 and HO 1111 or BIOL 3301 and BIOL 3302 or BIOL 2227 and BIOL 2228. F, S
HIT 2213 Advanced Coding and Revenue Cycle Management: 4 semester hours.
Practical application of ICD, CPT, and prospective payment groupers utilizing relevant software and electronic patient records to perform competency-based simulations. Application and validation of diagnostic codes, procedural codes, and groupings of coded data in revenue cycle processes according to official guidelines, clinical documentation improvement, audit standards, and various reimbursement systems. Evaluate compliance with regulatory requirements and reimbursement methodologies. PREREQ: HIT 2205, HIT 2206, and HIT 2209. F, S
HIT 2215 Introduction to Reimbursement: 2 semester hours.
Introduction to processing health insurance claims through medical insurance, payer requirements, state and federal regulations, abstracting of source documents, accurate completion of claims, and coding of diagnoses and procedures/services. Utilizes national diagnosis and procedure coding systems and claims processing software. PREREQ: HIT 2202. F, S
HIT 2216 Healthcare Statistics and Data Management Analytics: 3 semester hours.
Apply and manage technologies and concepts of data management and analytics in healthcare database systems. Evaluate compliance with regulatory standards for exchange of health information. Application of research methodologies utilized in healthcare. Create graphical representations of healthcare data. PREREQ: HIT 2202, HIT 2215, HIT 2220. F, S
HIT 2217 Quality Improvement: 3 semester hours.
The assessment, monitoring, evaluation and improvement of the framework used to systematically improve health care. PREREQ: MATH 1123 or MATH 1153, HIT 2215. F, S
HIT 2220 Informatics Technology I: 3 semester hours.
Introduction to information systems and their importance in the health care industry. Emphasis on information technology, information system characteristics and use. The study of processes supported in health informatics and information to include the electronic health record and the management of information and information systems in the inpatient and outpatient health care settings. HIT 2224 Informatics Technology II: 3 semester hours.
Data analysis and decision support for health informatics. Database concepts, project management, network concepts, system analysis and design. Content of health records, health informatics and information standards as per regulatory agencies and accreditation. PREREQ: HIT 2220. F, S
HIT 2240 Medical Coding Practicum: 4 semester hours.
Directed clinical coding and reimbursement practice under the preceptorship of a practicing professional for 40 hours a week for four weeks; also includes the successful completion of HIT/HIM projects as assigned. PREREQ: HO 1106, HO 1107, HO 2208, HO 2209, HO 1111, HIT 2202, HIT 2205, HIT 2206, HIT 2209, HIT 2215. PRE-OR-COREQ: HIT 2213. F, S
