Course Learning Outcomes are measurable statements that are used to identify the specific knowledge and skills that a student should have at the end of a course.

JAPN 1101
L1- Students will be able to ask and answer questions, initiate and respond to simple statements and conversation through such tasks as greetings, daily activities, and talking about experiences.
L2- Students will be able to understand sentence-length utterances through the situational context related to personal daily activities.
L3- Students will be able to understand the basic writing through introduction of Japanese culture, customs and short stores.
L4- Students will be able to write short sentences, memos, and essays with 45 kanji characters and its compound words. 
L5- Students will be able to recognize the different cultures and act appropriately in familiar situations.  

JAPN 1102
L1- Students will be able to ask and answer questions, initiate and respond to simple statements and conversations utilizing present/past tense, polite/plan form, and expressing personal feelings in various settings. 
L2- Students will be able to understand sentence-length utterances through the situational context related to personal daily activities.
L3- Students will be able to understand the basic writing through introduction of Japanese culture, customs and short stores. 
L4- Students will be able to write short sentences, memos, and essays with 60 kanji characters and its compound words. 
L5- Students will be able to recognize the different cultures and act appropriately in familiar situations.  

JAPN 2201
L1- Students will be able to ask and answer questions, initiate and respond to simple statements and conversation through such tasks as ordering a meal, planning a trip, and talking about experiences.
L2- Students will be able to understand sentence-length utterances through the situational context related to personal background and needs.
L3- Students will be able to understand various styles of Japanese writing through experiences in Japan, personal advice column, popular manga, and autobiography.
L4- Students will be able to write short messages, postcards, notes of telephone messages, and essays with 79 kanji characters and its compound words.
L5- Students will be able to act appropriately in familiar situations such as at work, at cultural events, at school, and at home.

JAPN 2202
L1- Students will be able to ask and answer questions, and express their thought through various settings, such as at the airport, at home, at school, and at shopping.
L2- Students will be able to understand through the situational context related to personal background and needs, such as in college life, and in their daily life.
L3-  Students will be able to understand various styles of Japanese, ranging from letters and fables to essays and advertisements. 
L4- Students will be able to write letters, journals, and essays, using Japanese writing systems and forms.
L5- Students will be able to act appropriately in familiar situations such as at part time jobs, meeting a host-family, at schools, and at shopping.

L1- Understand a fundamental knowledge of Japanese kanji, meanings, on-and-kun reading, radicals, stroke orders and usage.
L2- Fulfill survival skill need to read and write in daily life.
L3- Read and write 320 kanji characters from jooyoo kanji and compound words frequently used in everyday life.
L4-Read short stories and children’s books, signs and advertisement.
L5- Write journals, memos, letters, and short essays with kanji.

L3- Students will be able to read and answer questions, analyzing a variety of readings in Japanese.
L4- Students will be able to understand and to write in either polite form or plain form in social and personal context. 
L5- Students will be able to analyze Japanese thought and sociocultural behavior.

JAPN 3302
L1- Students will be able to converse and act in Japanese in culturally appropriate ways.
L2- Students will be able to understand speech forms and written forms through the situational context from slow to normal speed for about 3 minutes to 5 minutes. 
L3- Students will be able to read and answer questions, and engage effectively texts of various genres in Japanese at a normal speed.
L4- Students will be able to write well in a casual and professional form of writing, such as letters, journals, job applications, and essays and short stories.
L5- Students will be able to acquire cultural manners and etiquettes, comparing their own cultures.

JAPN 3303
L1- Japanese language skills in professional contexts, including accurate use of grammar, vocabulary, and formal registers appropriate to business, medical, legal, or other professional settings.
L2- Engage effectively in spoken professional Japanese, participating in meetings, interviews, negotiations, and other workplace interactions with cultural and linguistic competence.
L3- Produce written documents in Japanese relevant to professional contexts, such as reports, correspondence, summaries, and proposals, with clarity and accuracy.
L4- Interpret and respond to authentic Japanese materials in professional domains, including manuals, regulations, case studies, and technical texts.

L1- Recognize and write intermediate-level kanji and their components accurately, demonstrating proper stroke order, meaning, and pronunciation.
L2- Apply kanji knowledge in reading comprehension, interpreting intermediate texts and identifying kanji in context to extract meaning.
L3- Use kanji effectively in writing, producing coherent sentences and short compositions that integrate newly learned characters and compounds.
L4- Demonstrate communicative competence by incorporating intermediate kanji in spoken and written Japanese to convey ideas clearly in everyday and academic contexts.

JAPN 3321
L1- Recognize and accurately write a larger set of intermediate kanji and compounds, demonstrating mastery of stroke order, readings (onyomi and kunyomi), and meanings in context.
L2- Apply kanji knowledge in more complex reading comprehension tasks, including short essays, articles, and professional or academic texts, to extract nuanced meaning.
L3- Produce coherent written texts using intermediate kanji, integrating appropriate characters, compounds, and idiomatic expressions to convey ideas clearly and accurately.
L4- Demonstrate advanced communicative competence, incorporating intermediate kanji effectively in both spoken and written Japanese to participate in discussions, presentations, and collaborative projects.
