How to Read Course Descriptions

The bolded first line begins with a capitalized abbreviation that designates the subject area followed by the course number and title. The number of credits earned by taking the courses is also displayed.

The course description is a brief summary of the purpose of the course and the topics covered. Any requisite courses are listed and could include the following:

Courses showing the abbreviation “COREQ” require simultaneous registration with each course named as a corequisite.
The abbreviation “PRE-or-COREQ” means that each course named may have been taken prior to or may be taken concurrently with the course for which it is required.
Courses showing the abbreviation “PREREQ” require the courses named as prerequisites to have been taken previously.

If the course can be applied towards a General Education Objective, the applicable Objective is listed.

To assist with your academic planning, courses in the Undergraduate Catalog are designated according to the semester they are usually offered. Unanticipated faculty vacancies and academic program changes may affect future course scheduling. Therefore, students should always contact the academic department to verify future course offerings, especially when specific courses are needed for graduation.

R1 = Course is rotated every year, either Fall or Spring

EMT 1101 Emergency Medical Technician: 8 semester hours.

This course follows the National EMS Education Standards for Emergency Medical Technicians, preparing students to provide emergency care in pre-hospital settings. Topics include EMS systems and operations, preparatory concepts, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, patient assessment, airway management, shock and resuscitation, medical and trauma emergencies, and care for special populations. Instruction emphasizes scene safety, patient communication, legal and ethical considerations, and the roles and responsibilities of EMTs in the broader healthcare system. COREQ: EMT 1101L. F, S, D

EMT 1101L Emergency Medical Technician Lab: 2 semester hours.

This lab provides supervised practice and evaluation of the psychomotor skills required of entry-level Emergency Medical Technicians. Students apply lecture concepts through hands-on training, simulation, and clinical experiences that develop proficiency in airway management, oxygen delivery and ventilation, patient assessment and vital signs, CPR and AED operation, management of medical, trauma, and obstetric emergencies, bleeding control and splinting, communication and documentation, and scene size-up, extrication, and mass-casualty incident response. Students complete skills labs, simulation exercises, clinical rotations, required patient contacts, and a comprehensive psychomotor examination. COREQ: EMT 1101. F, S, D

EMT 2201 Advanced Emergency Medical Technician: 3 semester hours.

This course builds on EMT foundational knowledge and follows the National EMS Education Standards for the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT). Through lecture and guided study, students develop the theoretical knowledge required to assess and manage patients experiencing medical, traumatic, and environmental emergencies. Topics include anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, airway management, intravenous therapy, fluid resuscitation, cardiac emergencies, medical and trauma management, obstetric and pediatric emergencies, and EMS operations. Emphasis is placed on integrating critical thinking, clinical judgment, and professional communication in the prehospital environment. PREREQ: EMT 1101, EMT 1101L; COREQ: EMT 2201L, EMT 2202 F, S, D

EMT 2201L Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Lab: 2 semester hours.

This hands-on laboratory course provides supervised practice and evaluation of the psychomotor skills required for Advanced EMT certification. Students apply theoretical concepts from EMTA 2201 through simulation and scenario-based exercises that develop proficiency in advanced airway management, intravenous and intraosseous access, medication administration, cardiac rhythm interpretation, and management of complex medical and trauma emergencies. EMT 2202 Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Clinical: 1 semester hour.

This clinical and field experience provides students with supervised opportunities to apply Advanced EMT knowledge and skills in real-world emergency medical settings. Students complete rotations in hospital emergency departments and on licensed ambulance units, performing patient assessments, initiating IV therapy, administering medications, and assisting with advanced procedures under direct supervision. Clinical experiences focus on patient care, documentation, and professional interaction within multidisciplinary healthcare teams. Successful completion of all required competencies and patient contacts is necessary to qualify for the National Registry Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (NRAEMT) psychomotor and cognitive examinations.
